- We are working on the diseases of the central nervous system and the respiratory system, based on pharmacological approaches. We are trying to elucidate the cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration as observed in the disorders like Parkinson disease, narcolepsy and stroke. A particular emphasis is on the roles of endogenous bioactive small molecules in neuronal degeneration regulated by cell-to-cell interactions within the brain. Concerning the respiratory system, our goal is to elucidate the molecular basis of physiology and pathophysiology of lung cells, thereby to evaluate new drugs to treat chronic lung diseases. We are also interested in the effects of traditional herbal medicines, which include a number of bioactive materials useful to examine cell physiology and to develop new drugs.
